Is there a record about me?

If you've had work done by a tradesperson who uses Check the Customer, they may have kept a record of the job. You have the right to know what's held about you, to see it, and to challenge it. Asking is free.

What a record can contain

Job facts only: a reference, the agreed terms, dates, amounts, payment status, dispute status and supporting documents. Not opinions, ratings, accusations of crime or sensitive personal details.

Who can see it

The trade member who created it, and our trained staff where needed to run the service. It is never published to the public. Advertisers and partners never see it.

You're not a member by default

A record about you doesn't make you a user of our service. Having no record, or not being on the platform, never counts against you.

What we hold

What a record can and can’t hold

A record holds job facts and the fewest details needed to be sure it's the right person. Some things are never collected or shown at all. Tap a blacked-out line to see why.

Your rights

What you can ask us to do

Under UK data protection law you have these rights. Some have legal exceptions, and if one applies we'll explain which and why.

See it

Ask whether we hold information about you and get a copy, with where it came from and who has seen it.

Correct it

Have wrong or incomplete information corrected, or a clarification added.

Delete it

Ask for it to be erased where there's no good reason for us to keep it.

Restrict it

Ask us to stop using it while a challenge is looked at.

Object to it

Object to us using it, and we'll weigh your reasons against ours.

Challenge a record

Challenge its accuracy, whether it's really you, how it's linked to a job, or the context.

Challenges

How a challenge is handled

  1. We acknowledge your request and check it's really you, so we never give your information to someone else.
  2. We open a case and look at the evidence on both sides. Paying members don't automatically win.
  3. A trained person decides and writes down the reason.
  4. If you disagree, you can appeal, and someone else reviews it where practical.

Possible outcomes

CorrectedClarifiedRemovedRestrictedKept with a clarificationUnresolved

Every outcome is recorded with its reason, and your legal rights stay the same whatever we decide.

Timescales

AcknowledgementWithin 5 working days
Answer to a rights requestWithin one month of confirming who you are. If it's complex we may extend by up to two more months, and we'll tell you why.
CostFree in almost all cases

Not happy with how we've handled it? You can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Make a request

We only use these details to deal with your request and keep a record that we did. We'll never pass them to the trade member without telling you first. See the privacy notice.

Proving it's you

Before we share or change anything, we'll contact you to confirm your identity. We'll only ask for what's needed, and we delete any ID documents once they've been checked.

A complaint about a tradesperson's work?

We can't judge the quality of someone's work, but our complaints page explains where to go and how disputes on the platform work.
